Open letter to God: On behalf of America

Dear God:

I have a request. Not like a prayer or anything, just a simple request.

As you know, Lord, I am not a very religious man, so if you think my request is out of line, forgive me. Talking to you is awkward for me, but I’m convinced that you listen, even to what irreligious people have to say. So here’s my request.

It’s about America, Lord.

You see, America, the country I call home, is in deep, deep trouble. If we don’t get help soon I’m afraid that our country will die, like so many nations before us. We need to do something that none of us are able to do. We all try but it’s not working.

So we’re desperate. We need help. Divine help.

America is not the same country it was a hundred years ago. Or even ten years ago. Sure, Lord, I realize that all things in nature, including nations, change, and I accept that as a fact of life. But it’s what America is changing to, from what it was, that scares me.

Without giving it a second thought, we’ve gone from a land of independence and freedom for people of faith, hard work, and good conscience, to a nation weakened by political deceit and deception; and now the worst thing of all—we’re going down a treacherous road of foreign entanglements, political intrigue, and military dominance all over the globe.

This change in American policy should be as troubling to you, Lord, as it is to people like me who love our country. After all, it was you who put the idea of a new kind of nation, free from tyranny, in the mind of our founding fathers.

I’m convinced that it was you speaking through Thomas Jefferson when he said “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their CREATOR with certain unalienable rights; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” But right now America is losing all three.

You gave us this land, Lord. So in the scheme of things you must have thought it was time for people who were tired of kings and tyrants to improve their lot—so that’s how America was born.

But now America is gradually going down (forgive me) a path to hell. And Lord, none of us seems able to do anything about it. Sure, we write about what we see happening to America, talk about it, fight it, try to make people aware of it, but most Americans don’t even know what’s going on in this country. Worst of all, they don’t seem care.

Am I being over-dramatic about America’s decline, Lord? Is there a purpose for the death of a country so full of life? Is this your ultimate plan for America?

No! I will never believe that.

My Bible says that when you created the universe you said everything in it was Good, so why is a good nation like America on such a destructive path? Since you wouldn’t hurt your own creation it must be ourselves doing it, and that thought shocks and confuses me.

I shouldn’t have to tell you how this country is changing, Lord, but maybe a quick reminder will show you how much we need your help to get back on track.

One by one we are losing all the blessings you gave us. Our government is out of control and growing bigger, more secretive, and more restrictive than I’m sure our founders, and you yourself, ever meant it to be.

We are foolishly ignoring the principles of independence. We are trading our freedoms for state protection from terrorist ghosts. We are being lied to by our politicians. Our media gives us half-truths. The schools are damaging our kids’ minds by re-writing our history books. We are doing away with any reference to you, Lord, and to your words. We are being led on a leash into global wars and intrigues that we have no business being in.

And the worst part of all, Lord, is that this is not the doing of patriotic people who have America’s interest at heart; these are the actions of devious, treacherous individuals in and out of our government who are using America’s power and freedoms to further their own ends.

These “part-time” Americans, Lord, have somehow wormed their way into positions of power and influence in our government and now have the administration of our once great land by the throat.

Yes, Lord, I know that all nations have their share of poverty, crime, corruption, economic woes, even “political correctness”, but the poisonous agenda of the anti-American tribes who are now calling the shots of this nation’s foreign policy is a thousand times more dangerous than anything we’ve ever encountered before.

What’s more, we’re being destroyed both from within and without, Lord. From without, by citizens of other countries who hate us but are willing to “love” us for our money; and from within, by treacherous people whose real allegiance is not to America but to some foreign power.

We used to think that, as Americans, we could handle everything; take care of our great country without help from anybody. We were born and brought up that way. But we’re wrong. We’ve lost our compass. And history has proven over and over that a nation of free and independent people will not last when its citizens become weak, complacent, or unaware of the evil that attacks from both within and without.

So please, Lord, for our sake, for the sake of the fabulous nation you gave us, help us out of this mess. Show us the way back to what America was and should be: a country of freedoms, individual rights, and a foreign policy of minding our own business.
