What is meant by power?: And I don’t mean weight-lifting

At 30 I thought I knew everything. At 40 I was sure of it. At 50 I suspected I hardly knew anything. At 60 I was sure of it.

Therefore, I need your help. I would like some opinions on this article because I’m scared to death for my country, my family, and myself.

I’m not trying to strike up any lasting relationships. Or even meet new friends. What I want are some thoughts from people who believe they know and understand what “power” means. Not the usual “physical” kinds of power. Not even the “mental” or “healing” kinds.

I want opinions about the esoteric, indescribable, and often dangerous applications of power; as you, yourself, understand it. Let me explain.

On Nov 11th, I wrote an article: “Who Knows Why We Went To War? Ask Orwell.” In the article I said I had thought about the many possible reasons for our war with Iraq, but none seemed plausible. There was one reason, however, I had not considered: Power. Pure power. Not as a means to an end, but power for the sake of power, nothing more.

At that point I recalled how, in his book 1984, George Orwell had defined in great detail the mysterious power of Big Brother, and the tyrannical world of torture, fear, and hate that he “ruled”.

THAT is power for power’s sake.

Then later, I thought again of how Dr. Stanley Monteith, in his spellbinding book, “Brotherhood of Darkness” had, by studying and dismissing all the secret cults, concluded that our turmoil is the result of our battle against an evil force in the world, and that each of us is involved in the struggle, whether we want to be or not.

THAT is power for power’s sake.

Two days ago I received an e-mail from a gentleman who had read my Orwell article and was commenting on it. I will quote it in its entirety because he apparently sees this Power at work in America, and I cannot give his thoughts justice by editing what he said. Here is how he answered my article:

“Jim, POWER, alas, is the name of the game. Divide and conquer has allowed unbridled power to be acquired unconstitutionally in America, and preemptively killing the citizens of other nations is how it is now being acquired internationally (from, those who sponsor “hate crimes” legislation, no less).

“Instead of realizing that the “leaders” of this nation are dangerous megalomaniacs, the citizens actually believe that their leaders are acting in their best interests. Malevolent megalomaniacs leading self-imposed, ignorant, apathetic fools over a cliff is the standard fare of history, and we are just the latest groups to want what never was, and never will be; and are destroying ourselves to reach the unreachable.

“America has become a fool’s paradise and the citizens accept the premise. They cheer that which they cannot bring themselves to view due to its hideousness; they give lip service to ideals while simultaneously allowing these ideals to be perverted and actually define themselves as ‘democrat’ or ‘republican’, an ideation that shows their entire existence has been captured by the malevolent. A nation such as this cannot last. It will not last. Never in the history of mankind has an abomination remained for very long. We have embraced the abomination that Amerika has become and will pay the price.”

This treatise, though depressing in its delivery is sound in its content. The letter about a malevolence, the Monteith book explaining the nature of power, Orwell’s portrayal of Big Brother as an evil power, and other writings have convinced me that there is, in fact, a malevolent force at work in the world, which uses power for one reason only: MORE POWER.

And we in America have been seduced by it; because either we don’t recognize it for what it is, are too apathetic to confront it, haven’t yet become aware of it, or don’t believe it even exists.

Some churches teach that God is Love and God is All, and that there is no other power in the universe but Good. I wish I believed that. I wish I COULD believe it. Even when the churches call evil “error”, changing its name makes little impression on me.

We, I believe, are being held in the thrall of this malevolent force, with the result that what is happening to the world today, the horrendous war we find ourselves in, and the destruction and death of America, seems inevitable.

But I want to know how YOU interpret Power. I need feedback, your opinion, your idea about this dark and dangerous force that is feeding itself on human lives. Please contact me and help me to understand it.

Thank you. . .
