Just days after the devastating storm that wiped out New Orleans, the nationally renowned MSNBC website displayed a gigantic headline that read, “The Wrath of Katrina”.
How wrong it was.
Hurricanes are weather patterns that are named by man. Hurricanes do not have minds of their own, and neither did Hurricane Katrina.
It is not the “wrath of Katrina” that should have shocked and awed man, but rather the wrath of God.
It is God Himself who controls all things whatsoever that come to pass, whether it is seemingly insignificant as a sparrow falling to the ground in the middle of an uninhabited forest, or a massive devastating hurricane that levels cities.
“Declaring the end from the beginning,” says God in Isaiah 46:10, “and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure….”
God controls all things, and nothing – not even Katrina – occurs in a vacuum. Only evolutionists, atheists, secularists and the like could possibly embrace such a diabolical concept.
He is the creator, preserver and ruler of nations. All peoples and nations everywhere should heed His law, knowing full well that their very existence hangs in the balance like a spider from a thread over a hot consuming inferno. But for the grace of this benevolent God, all would be engulfed without delay.
In the wake of the horrifying events that transpired on September 11, 2001, the entire United States of America came together in a glorious display of patriot fervor and called upon God to shower His blessings over the land.
Everywhere you looked, the slogan, “God Bless America”, was plastered: bumper stickers, t-shirts, window signs. Sporting events encouraged its patrons to sing “God Bless America” all across the nation from sea to shining sea. Baseball stadiums replaced the usual “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” melody normally reserved for the seventh inning stretch with “God Bless America”. Television commercials and programs displayed the slogan constantly. And of course politicians from both major parties bandied the slogan about at every opportunity.
It was a hip slogan, and everybody sang it, regardless of how religious or irreligious they were.
But, oh how arrogant and presumptuous we Americans are!
How dare our nation call upon the blessings of God when she is totally unwilling to repent of her national sins and seek to abide by Godly laws?
How dare a nation that celebrates sodomy, perversion and abortion vainly cry out for God to bless her land?
How dare America who demonizes Christians on television and showers accolades upon unrepentant homosexuals call upon God to bless her?
The Third Commandment of the Law of God declares, “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”
The entire nation took God’s name in vain.
Ironically, the annual Southern Decadence festival was scheduled to take place in New Orleans just days after Hurricane Katrina struck. According to Repent America, the festival is “an annual homosexual celebration attracting tens of thousands of people to the French Quarters section of New Orleans….” The celebration annually fills the city “with drunken homosexuals engaging in sex acts in the public streets and bars” and has been increasing dramatically with every passing year.
Am I saying that God sent Hurricane Katrina specifically because of this one single event that celebrates sin and perversion? Of course not. If God displayed His wrath at every moment a sin is committed, then the entire universe would cease to exist. God is a longsuffering God and selects and appoints the day and hour when blessings are withheld and wrath inflicted, and because nations cannot be dealt with in the afterlife, they must be dealt with in the here and now.
God instructs, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
The opposite is also true. If people live proudly and arrogantly, vainly calling upon God but unwilling to repent humbly of their sins, then God’s wrath should be expected. People should not be surprised when the hand of protection is removed briefly in light of their unrepentant decadence and moral decay and a hurricane such as Katrina wreaks devastation.
It was once said that if God does not punish cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, then He owes Sodom and Gomorrah an apology. This sentiment has a ring of truth to it.
In one heartbeat, the Big Easy went from first world to third world, from space age to ice age.
Americans must stop being so presumptuous, thinking that because our nation is somehow the mightiest nation (empire?) on earth, nothing can happen to her. During the unconstitutional war in the Middle East, Americans constantly boasted of the term, “Shock and Awe,” somehow believing that our superior military might enables us to project our “national interest” across the globe at will.
However, without God’s protection, our nation is powerless and totally vulnerable to any and all possible threats. Katrina very well could have been just the tip of the iceberg. It is Katrina that is an example of God’s shock and awe, and Americans should boast of Him, not of their own abilities.
Americans need to repent and turn to Jesus Christ our God.
Only then should we even begin to think about humming “God bless America”.
