On December 7th 1941 Pearl Harbor was bombed by a Japanese sneak attack, condemning thousands of souls to the bottom of the sea, and sealing the fate of a nation. The United States would enter the Second World War.

Now imagine if the United States government withheld who was behind the Pearl Harbor bombings and deemed such information classified for national security reasons. Farfetched? That is precisely what happened on September 11th 2001.

A PBS Transcript of an interview with Senator Graham of the Select Committee On Intelligence revealed the most shocking news story since the terrorist bombings took place. When discussing classified evidence that he felt Americans should know about, Graham said, “I was surprised at the evidence that there were foreign governments involved in facilitating the activities of at least some of the terrorists in the United States.”

Understand clearly the impact of this statement. The Senator is saying that a foreign government or governments committed an act of war against the United States, but the government of the United States is hiding that information from its citizens in the name of national security.

How exactly can Americans through their congress decide on the best course of action if information about those responsible is being denied? Instead of this abstract war on terrorism to rid the planet of evil wherever it may surface, that of course will last forever, and is increasingly moving us towards a totalitarian state, Americans could intelligently decide whether to wage war against the nation or nations responsible.

The 9-11 cover-up is not only denying Americans their right to decide the best course of action, it is also endangering the lives of Americans to possible future attacks. Senator Graham, when speaking of classified evidence and the dereliction of the U.S. government to pursue it, said, “I am stunned that we have not done a better job of pursuing that to determine if other terrorists received similar support and, even more important, if the infrastructure of a foreign government assisting terrorists still exists for the current generation of terrorists who are here planning the next plots.”

So because the United States government is not pursuing the nation or nations that assisted the terrorists, the possibility exists that the nation behind it is still operating on American soil. The public is being held completely in the dark on the issue.

The possibilities of who assisted the terrorists are nearly limitless. It could be supposed allies that are receiving foreign aid from America like Saudi Arabia or Israel. It could be potential adversaries like China or Russia. Equally as important a question as who was behind the attacks is why hide it from the American public?

Regardless of any supposed reason for the cover-up, it is wrong and has nothing to do with national security. Americans have a right to know what nation or nations committed an act of war against them. Cover-ups typically imply that there is something to hide.

The president has been given powers that no American president has ever had before. Congress has ceded its constitutional duty to declare war to Bush. Even General Washington in the American Revolution had to answer to congress.

Why is it that the United States Congress, the instrument of the political will of the American people, cedes its most important power to the president?

At the same time that it does so the American people are being denied the right to know whom it was that assisted in the 9-11 attacks.

The essence of Bush’s war on terrorism is to protect the U.S. government from American citizens by stripping them of civilian rights as guaranteed by the Bill Of Rights, while at the same time leaving Americans defenseless to foreign terrorists.

While the U.S. marches towards war in Iraq, the borders of the United States are left undefended. In the name of security American citizens are being forced to undergo humiliating strip searches at airports while foreign terrorists may as well be allowed to come and go as they please.

The Bush administration takes national security so seriously that an Illegal Alien worked at the White House. And we are told that we must sacrifice some of our freedom for security.

Oh, and in 30 years or so the information about who it was that was behind the attacks on September 11th 2001 might become public.
