Summary: Even though downloading files through Torrent networks is perfectly legal, some internet service providers, colleges and governments have blocked access to these sites.

If you have found yourself in a position where you cannot access your favorite Torrenting sites, or want to remain anonymous while you download files, there are easy ways to do it.

Connecting through a Virtual Private Network service is the perfect method for keeping yourself anonymous while you are downloading via Torrenting and Peer2Peer networks.

Why You Should Trust Us

At Etherzone, we pride ourselves in staying at the forefront of the internet technology, security and filesharing industries, and to helping our readers achieve their goals.

We have devoted significant amounts of time testing every VPN service we’ve found to determine which services are worth spending your money on when you want to Torrent anonymously.

Testing Methodology

Many VPN services claim that they are the best in the industry, but only one service can claim that title. We want to help sift through the marketing hype and find the best VPN service available.

Unfortunately, many of the services do not live up to the claims that they’ve made, which is why we intend to uncover their hype, and highlight the services that are worth spending your money on.

How We Tested Each VPN Service

To ensure you can remain anonymous while you’re downloading files via Torrent and filesharing networks, we’ve tested more than 170 different VPN services with a three-step elimination process.

To skip the methodology and go straight to our recommendations, click here now.

To begin eliminating services from our list, we’ve removed any service that is based in a country that participates in the invasive “14 Eyes” agreement.

Then, we checked features offered by the remaining services to ensure they provide the features someone downloading Torrents will need to stay anonymous and secure.

We also utilized third-party review websites to verify customer reviews for the services remaining on our list, and removed services that consistently received poor ratings.

Finally, services that survived our initial elimination process were pitted against each other to determine which services are worthy of deeper investigation.

The criteria we used for this are:

  • Price
  • Setup Process
  • Ease of Use
  • Speed
  • Customer Service

Below are the results of our elimination and review process.

VPN Services You Should Avoid

With more than 170 different VPN services to choose from, we began by eliminating services that participate in the invasive “14 Eyes” surveillance program.

14 Eyes is an agreement between different governments around the world that forces internet service providers to track what you’re doing on their network and turn those logs over to the government.

123 of the original 173 VPN services are active participants in the 14 Eyes program and have been eliminated from being eligible for our recommendation as the best VPN service for Torrenting.

GoVPN, IPPredator and ChillGlobal are three examples of services we’ve eliminated for participating in 14 Eyes.

VPNs Disqualified Due to Missing Features

To help you stay anonymous while you are downloading files via Torrenting networks, we’ve eliminated VPN services that do not provide the features you need.

Criteria #1: Unlimited Bandwidth and Data Transfer

When you’re downloading large files, you are going to be consuming large amounts of bandwidth and need a service that won’t limit your account because of it.

VPN services that have policies in place that will limit your connection speeds or your account access due to excessive bandwidth consumption have been eliminated from our review.

Cloak and Celo are two services that have developed a reputation for limiting your connection speeds for downloading large files. We eliminated them immediately.

Criteria #2: Support for Multiple Operating Systems

You may want to use the VPN service you subscribe to for keeping every device you own safe, which means you need a VPN service that supports multiple major operating systems.

VPN services that supply software that isn’t compatible with major operating systems have been eliminated from our review process to ensure you do not encounter any problems.

IntelliVPN and SunVPN are two examples of services that provide software that isn’t compatible with major operating systems. We eliminated them.

Criteria #3: Support Multiple Concurrent Connections

You may also want to connect to the VPN service with multiple devices at the same time and need a VPN service that has a strong network, capable of handling each additional connection.

VPN services that limit your upload and download speeds or become unreliable when you attempt to connect with multiple devices at the same time have been eliminated.

IBVPN and HotVPN are two examples of services that cannot handle multiple concurrent connections and were eliminated.

Criteria #4: No Peer2Peer Blocking

Some VPN services have started blocking your access to filesharing and Torrenting networks, which will make it impossible for you to download with Torrents.

VPN services that limit your access to Torrenting networks or cancel your account for attempting to connect to them have been eliminated from our list.

LibertyVPN is a perfect example of a service that limits access to Peer2Peer and filesharing networks.

Criteria #5: Free Trials, Refunds and Money-Back Guarantee

It’s a sad fact that, even in today’s competitive industry, some VPN services still refuse to offer free-trial periods or a valid money-back guarantee.

VPN services that do not offer free trials or a refund policy they stand behind have been eliminated from our review to ensure you can get your money returned if you have problems that we didn’t.

VPNBaron and VPN Shield are two examples of services we’ve eliminated due to a lack of refund policies or free-trial periods.

VPNs Eliminated Due to Poor Reviews

To continue our elimination process, we’ve also removed services from our list that have developed a poor reputation in the VPN industry.

Any service that has consistently received lower than a 60% rating on third-party review websites has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.

Top Three VPNs for Torrenting Anonymously

After eliminating as many services as possible from our list, we dwindled down the original list of 173 VPN services to three remaining candidates.

Each of the remaining three services will be reviewed based on five criteria:

  • Price
  • Setup Process
  • Ease of Use
  • Speed
  • Customer Service

Each of the remaining three services are going to be compared against each other to determine which service is best for Torrenting anonymously.

#1 ExpressVPN – (9.5 / 10) – The Best VPN Service for Torrenting Anonymously

When you want to stay safe and anonymous while you’re downloading files via Torrent networks, ExpressVPN is the best service we’ve found.

PROs

ExpressVPN is priced low enough to remain competitive, while still charging enough to ensure they can properly maintain their network. They charge $12.95 per month, or $8.32 for 12 months.

If you experience issues with their service, the customer support team at ExpressVPN is extremely helpful, and responded to most of our requests within 60 minutes.

When we performed speed tests, ExpressVPN provided some of the fastest upload and download speeds, and did not show signs of slowing down as the tests progressed.

The software provided by ExpressVPN is easy to download, install and use to connect to their network, and we didn’t experience any issues, regardless of which operating system we used.

CONs

The only issue we had with ExpressVPN was when we submitted a request to their customer service team and waited around three hours for a response.

In speed tests performed out of Australia, ExpressVPN did perform slightly slower than the service that claimed our #2 spot, but that could have been related to the time of day we performed the test.

Summary: If you’re trying to stay safe, secure and anonymous while downloading files via Torrents, ExpressVPN is the clear winner of our review process.

They offer the strongest network we’ve seen, great customer support that responds quickly and competitive pricing, all of which helped them secure our #1 spot.

#2 IPVanish – (7.5 / 10) – Suitable if ExpressVPN isn’t Available for You

There may be times that ExpressVPN doesn’t work for you the way it worked for us, which means you’ll need an alternative service that’s comparable in most areas, like IPVanish.

PROs

IPVanish is one of the most competitively priced VPN services we’ve tested, charging $4.87 per month when you pay for 12 months, or $7.50 per month for a single month’s subscription.

The software included with your IPVanish subscription is easy to download, install, configure and use to connect to their network, and is compatible with most major operating systems.

During testing, we connected to their network with multiple devices at the same time, and did not experience many issues with reliability or connection speeds.

CONs

While performing speed tests, we did notice that IPVanish was slower than ExpressVPN, but we didn’t have any dropped connections while downloading large files.

When we requested help from the IPVanish customer support team, we waited longer for a response to our requests. In one case, it took them 24 hours to answer our request.

Summary: While the service that IPVanish offers is comparable to ExpressVPN in some areas, ExpressVPN is a much better solution when you download files using Torrenting networks.

If you find that ExpressVPN isn’t available for you or doesn’t work well with your hardware and software, IPVanish may be a suitable alternative solution.

#3 HideMyAss – (5.5 / 10) – Not Recommended

HideMyAss claiming our #3 spot has more to do with the remaining 170 competitors than it does with the service that HideMyAss offers to their subscribers.

PROs

The software supplied by HideMyAss didn’t give us many issues while downloading, installing and configuring it to connect to their network, but problems did begin once we were connected.

CONs

To start, HideMyAss is one of the most expensive VPN services on our list, charging $9.29 for 12-month subscriptions and $16.99 for subscriptions paid on a month-to-month basis.

During speed tests, our tests were continuously interrupted by dropped connections, and from what we saw during the tests, HideMyAss provides the slowest connection speeds.

While contacting their customer support team did get us helpful responses, they took more than 24 hours to respond to our requests in most cases.

While downloading large Torrent files, our downloads were constantly interrupted, making it nearly impossible to complete the download.

Summary: We faced numerous issues while testing the HideMyAss service, and those problems persisted throughout our entire review process.

If you want to stay safe and anonymous while downloading via Torrenting networks, there are much better solutions, like ExpressVPN or even IPVanish.
