Best VPN for Streaming US Television Shows Abroad
Summary: America is known for producing many top television shows, but some streaming services have begun blocking access to content to people who live outside the US.
Due to copyright and licensing issues, content produced inside the United States has been restricted in other countries to help protect the producing network’s best interests.
If you live or are traveling outside the United States and still want to stream your favorite television shows, you will need to connect through a Virtual Private Network service.
VPN services allow you to connect through a server in the United States, so your original location is hidden and you can gain access to content that has been restricted overseas.

The Etherzone writing and research team have devoted significant resources to staying at the forefront of the internet security and technology industries.
Our goal is to help you secure your connection while you are on the internet, protect you from hackers and government agencies and allow you to access restricted content.
If you’re like many other people, you may believe that you can subscribe to the first VPN service you encounter and access your favorite restricted content.
While most VPN services can assist you in bypassing network restrictions, very few VPN services offer the features and network strength needed to keep you from getting frustrated.
To ensure you can gain access to your favorite American TV shows while you’re abroad, we’ve reviewed more than 170 different VPN services using a three-step process.
To skip the methodology and go straight to our recommendations, click here now.
Our review process began by finding services that are in countries that can be forced to track your activity and turn over those logs to the local government. We eliminated them from our list.
We then looked at the features that each of the remaining VPN services offer with your subscription and eliminated services that do not offer a minimum set of features.
Then, we read reviews from other customers that have used the services that remained on our list, and eliminated services that have a poor reputation in the industry.
Finally, remaining services were compared against each other using five criteria that helped us continue eliminating low-quality services from our review.
Those criteria are:
- Setup Process
- Ease of Use
- Customer Service
Below are the results of our elimination and review process.
Starting with a list of 173 VPN services, we began eliminating any that are based in countries that are active participants in the “14 Eyes” surveillance program.
14 Eyes is an agreement between different countries that forces internet providers to track your network activity and turn those logs over to the local government.
Of the 173 original VPN services, 123 are active participants in the 14 Eyes program and have been removed from our list of possible recommendations.
IPPredator, ChillGlobal and GoVPN were all eliminated from our review process because of their participation in 14 Eyes.
To help you stream your favorite American TV shows while you’re living or traveling abroad, we’ve eliminated VPN services that do not have features you need with your subscription.
Criteria #1: Unlimited Bandwidth and Data Transfer
When you’re streaming high-definition video content, you are going to be consuming substantial amounts of bandwidth and need a service that can keep up.
VPN services that have hidden bandwidth limits or limit your account for consuming excessive amounts of bandwidth were eliminated from our review.
Cloak and Celo are two examples of services that have hidden bandwidth limits and were eliminated from our list.
Criteria #2: Support for Multiple Operating Systems
You may use multiple different devices to stream your favorite TV shows and movies, which means you need a service that offers support for different mainstream operating systems.
VPN services on our list that do not provide software that supports multiple different mainstream operating systems have been eliminated from our list.
SunVPN and IntelliVPN are two services that provide software that is not compatible with many different operating systems and were eliminated from our list.
Criteria #3: Support Multiple Concurrent Connections
If you use multiple different devices to connect to the internet, you are going to need a service that allows you to connect each of them to the VPN service’s network.
Services that will limit your connection speeds or refuse to allow you to open multiple concurrent connections were eliminated from our list.
IBVPN and HotVPN are two examples of services that have been eliminated for refusing to offer support for multiple active connections.
Criteria #4: No Peer2Peer Blocking
Some content streaming networks utilize Peer2Peer filesharing networks and technology to ensure you can stream your favorite TV shows and movies in high definition.
VPN services that limit your access to Peer2Peer and filesharing networks have been eliminated from our list to ensure you do not encounter issues while trying to stream American TV shows.
LibertyVPN is a prime example of one of the services we’ve eliminated from our list because of a lack of support for Peer2Peer and filesharing policies.
Criteria #5: Free Trials, Refunds and Money-Back Guarantee
To ensure that our readers are protected in the event the service we recommend doesn’t work with the hardware or software that they’re using, services need to provide a free-trial period.
Services that do not offer free-trial periods or a money-back guarantee and refund policy they stand behind have been eliminated from our list.
VPN Shield and VPNBaron are examples of services we’ve eliminated because they do not offer free-trial periods or refund policies.
To continue our elimination process, we’ve removed VPN services that have received a 60% rating (3-out-of-5 stars) or lower to quickly weed through low-quality providers.
We read reviews from past and current customers to verify that services on our list have not developed a poor reputation in the industry.
After working through the list of services, we’ve narrowed down the number of services that are competing for our top recommendation to just three.
Each of the remaining three services will be reviewed based on five criteria:
- Setup Process
- Ease of Use
- Customer Service
After extensive testing of the remaining three services, we’ve concluded that one service is better than the rest, and perfect for streaming American TV shows while you’re abroad.
#1 ExpressVPN – (9.5 / 10) – The Best VPN Service for Streaming US Television Shows Abroad
When it comes to accessing your favorite American TV shows and movies when you’re living or traveling abroad, ExpressVPN is the best service you can use to bypass content restrictions.
ExpressVPN remain competitive with their pricing, falling towards the lower end of the spectrum at $12.95 per month, and $8.32 when you pay for a 12-month subscription in advance.
The customer support team at ExpressVPN is helpful, and answered the requests that we submitted within 60 minutes in most cases.
When we started performing speed tests, ExpressVPN show no signs of slowdowns, and did not become unreliable or drop our connection.
ExpressVPN also supports every mainstream operating system, multiple active connections and provide software that is easy to download, install and use to connect to their network.
One area that concerned us with ExpressVPN was the occasion we needed to wait up to three hours for a response from their customer support team.
ExpressVPN also ranked #2 in speed tests that were performed through Australian-based servers, which may have been related to the time of day the tests were performed and the load on their servers.
Summary: When you’re looking for the best VPN service to help you bypass content restrictions and access your favorite American TV shows and movies, ExpressVPN is the clear winner.
They offer a strong network, fast connection speeds and reliable connections, a great customer support team and competitive pricing, helping them secure our top spot.

#2 IPVanish – (7.5 / 10) – Suitable if ExpressVPN isn’t Available for You
If you find that the software ExpressVPN provides doesn’t work well with your hardware or software, or you cannot connect to their network, IPVanish may be a suitable alternative.
When it comes to pricing, IPVanish is one of the most competitively priced services, charging $7.50 per month, or $4.87 when you pay for a 12-month subscription upfront.
The IPVanish software is easy to download, install, configure and use to connect to their network, and didn’t present many problems during our tests.
IPVanish supports multiple active connections and will not limit your account for consuming large amounts of bandwidth while streaming high-definition videos.
During testing, we didn’t experience reliability issues with our connection to their network, though we did notice that the speeds were slower than those provided by ExpressVPN.
When we submitted requests to the IPVanish customer support team, we were forced to wait longer for a response than we waited while submitting requests to ExpressVPN.
In speed tests, IPVanish performed slightly worse than ExpressVPN, suggesting that ExpressVPN has a stronger network with more infrastructure in place to handle more users.
Summary: While the service that IPVanish provides is comparable to ExpressVPN in some areas, ExpressVPN is a much better solution for streaming American TV shows and movies.
If you find that the service ExpressVPN offers does not work well with your hardware and software or where you’re located, IPVanish could be a suitable alternative.

#3 HideMyAss – (5.5 / 10) – Not Recommended
HideMyAss may have claimed the third spot in our review, but that doesn’t necessarily constitute us recommending them as a viable method for bypassing content restrictions.
The software that HideMyAss provides for you to connect to their network is easy to download, install and use to establish a connection.
HideMyAss is one of the most expensive VPN services that we’ve encountered and tested, charging $16.99 for single-month subscriptions and $9.29 for 12-month subscriptions.
During speed tests, our tests were consistently interrupted by dropped connections on multiple occasions, so we were unable to verify the results.
We attempted to contact their customer support team to help resolve the issues we were having and were forced to wait more than 24 hours for a response to our requests.
While trying to stream HD video content, our connections became slow and unreliable, causing our streams to constantly lag and buffer.
Summary: We experienced significant issues while testing the HideMyAss VPN service, which makes it hard to recommend it as a method for streaming restricted American TV shows and movies.
If you’re trying to bypass content restrictions where you’re located, you will have a much easier time by using a service like ExpressVPN, or even IPVanish.
