Best VPN for League of Legends
Summary: League of Legends has become one of the most popular video games in the world, boasting more than 10,000,000 global players.
Without showing any signs of slowing down, the growth of League of Legends means that more and more people are going to be finding their way into the arena.
Unfortunately, having more people connecting to their servers means there are more opportunities for hackers to steal gamers’ sensitive information.
You could also find yourself being banned from playing League of Legends, and needing a way to bypass the restrictions so you can get back to slaying creep and contesting Baron.
If you want to keep yourself safe from hackers or bypass an IP ban, you are going to want to connect to the LoL servers through a Virtual Private Network service.
VPN services make it easy to secure your connection by encrypting the information you send and receive to the League servers, and hiding your location so you can bypass IP bans.

Best VPN for League of Legends
Top Three VPNs for League of Legends
At Etherzone, we’ve focused our goals on helping each and every one of our readers overcome problems they’re having with internet security and technology.
Our writers and researchers have spent years of their lives maintaining a position at the head of the internet security and technology industries.
In 2017, there are hundreds of VPN services you can choose from, and picking the best one to use is difficult because they all claim that they are the best solution available.
To help you overcome IP bans and keep your connection secure while you’re playing League of Legends, we’re putting each service available through an extensive testing process.
To help you ensure your connection to the League of Legends servers is secure and that you do not have to deal with IP suspensions or bans, we’ve tested 173 different VPN services.
To skip the methodology and go straight to our recommendations, click here now.
To start our elimination process, we’ve immediately removed any service that participates in the invasive “14 Eyes” agreement that is becoming more and more prevalent.
We’ve also gone through each of the features offered by the services on our list to ensure that they offer the tools we believe League of Legends players need from a VPN service.
We’ve verified that the services remaining on our list have not developed poor reputations through third-party customer review websites, and eliminated services with low ratings.
Finally, the remaining services have undergone extensive testing using five different criteria to determine which service is worthy of receiving our recommendation as the best VPN for LoL players.
Those criteria are:
Price – When it comes to pricing, the most expensive services aren’t always the best, and the cheapest priced services aren’t always the worst.
Setup Process – We’ve tested each service to ensure they provide software that is easy to install and configure, and doesn’t cause problems when it comes time to establish a connection to the VPN.
Ease of Use – We then tested each of the services to ensure connecting and staying connected to their network didn’t require extensive help from customer support.
Speed – Each of the services on our list had speed tests performed through multiple servers in different parts of the world to ensure they provide fast, reliable connection speeds.
Customer Service – We also tested the customer support teams for each remaining service by sending multiple requests at different times to verify how quickly they respond.
Below are the results we’ve found during our elimination and review process.
When you’re trying to stay anonymous online and secure your connection to the League of Legend servers, the last thing you want to deal with is an invasive surveillance program.
Numerous countries around the world have begun participating in an invasive surveillance program that’s part of an agreement being made between their governments.
The “14 Eyes” program forces internet service providers and VPN services to monitor your activity, and can force those services to turn the logs over to the local government.
Any VPN service on our list that participates in the 14 Eyes program has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.
As we progress through our elimination process, we’re going to be removing services from our list that do not offer the features we believe are necessary for League of Legends players.
We’ll cover each feature that we’re looking for and give you multiple examples of services that we’ve removed from our list for failing to provide the features.
Criteria #1: OpenVPN Support
Every VPN service uses one of many different protocols to manage your connection to their network. In general, OpenVPN is regarded as the most secure and easiest to use.
Any VPN service on our list that does not, at least, offer OpenVPN support with your subscription has been eliminated from being eligible for receiving our recommendation.
Betternet and AnonVPN are two services that we’ve eliminated because they do not offer OpenVPN support with your subscription.
Criteria #2: Unlimited Bandwidth and Data Transfer
When you are playing League games, you are transferring large amounts of data back and forth between your computer and the LoL servers.
VPN services that limit the amount of bandwidth you can use, or slow your connection speeds because of excessive use, have been eliminated from our list.
Cloak and Celo are two services that will throttle your connection speeds and cause lag while you’re gaming if you are consuming excessive amounts of bandwidth, and have been eliminated.
Criteria #3: No Data Logging Policies
VPN services and other internet service providers routinely track your activity to help diagnose issues you’re having with their network, but this practice creates new risks.
In the same manner that we’ve eliminated services that participate in the 14 Eyes program, we’ve also eliminated any service that tracks your activity on their network.
Hola!VPN and Seed4Me are two services that we’ve eliminated from being eligible for our recommendation due to their data logging practices.
Criteria #4: Support for Multiple Operating Systems
League of Legends works with multiple different operating systems, which means you need a VPN service that is compatible with the operating system you use.
To ensure you do not experience problems with a service we’ve recommended, we eliminated any service that provides software that isn’t compatible with mainstream operating systems.
SunVPN and IntelliVPN are two services we’ve eliminated because their software is buggy and not compatible with most major operating systems.
Criteria #5: Support Multiple Concurrent Connections
You also probably own more than one device that you use to connect to the internet, which means you need a VPN service that supports multiple active connections.
Any VPN service on our list that limits your connection speeds or your account access for attempting to connect with multiple devices at the same time has been eliminated from our review.
IBVPN and HotVPN are two services that will limit your account access and the number of connections you can open, and have been eliminated from being eligible for our recommendation.
Criteria #6: Free Trials, Refunds and Money-Back Guarantee
We want to ensure that each and every one of our readers can protect themselves and that they have the same experience with a VPN service we’ve recommended that we had during testing.
To ensure this is possible and that you can move onto a new service if your experience isn’t the same, we’ve eliminated any service that doesn’t have a refund policy or offer free trials.
VPNBaron and VPN Shield are two services we’ve eliminated from being eligible for our recommendation because they do not offer free trials or a money-back guarantee.
Criteria #7: No Peer2Peer Blocking
The League of Legends developers have implemented Peer2Peer and filesharing technology in their servers to help distribute the load and ensure everyone gets a lag-free experience.
Some VPN services have blocked this technology, making it impossible to access while you’re connected to their network, which is why they’ve been eliminated from our review.
LibertyVPN and VPNJack are two VPN services that have been eliminated because they block your ability to access Peer2Peer and filesharing networks.
Criteria #8: No Mandatory SMTP Blocking
Some VPN services have also blocked access to sending emails while you are connected to their network, because spammers have abused the privilege in the past.
To ensure you do not need to disconnect from the VPN service to send your emails, and then reconnect again when you’re ready to play LoL, we’ve eliminated services that block SMTP ports.
TorVPN and Tunnelbear are two services that block SMTP ports and your ability to send emails while you’re connected to their network that we’ve eliminated from our list.
To help aid our elimination process, we’ve utilized third-party websites that allow past and current customers of each service to leave a review of their experience.
Any VPN that has consistently received negative reviews and low ratings has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation as the best VPN for League of Legends.
After a thorough elimination process, we have dwindled our original list of 173 services down to a total of three. Each service is vying to receive our recommendation as the best VPN for LoL.
Each of the remaining three services will be reviewed based on five criteria:
- Setup Process
- Ease of Use
- Customer Service
Each of the three remaining services have undergone extensive testing and have been compared against each other to help us determine which service will receive our recommendation.
#1 ExpressVPN – (9.5 / 10) – The Best VPN Service for League of Legends
When you want the absolute best VPN service for League of Legends, we’ve found that ExpressVPN offers the strongest network, competitive pricing and great customer service.
ExpressVPN offers multiple different packages depending on how long you’re going to need to use the VPN service, with prices that keep them competitive in the industry.
When you subscribe to ExpressVPN on a month-to-month basis, they charge $12.95 per month. If you choose a 12-month subscription, you’ll be charged $8.32 per month.
It’s easy to see that they devote a significant amount of their resources to strengthening their network and building their customer support team.
We performed speed tests while connected to their network, and they ranked #1 in tests performed through servers based in the United States and the United Kingdom.
If you happen to have problems with your account or their network, the customer support team at ExpressVPN is helpful and responded to most of our requests within 60 minutes.
Even though ExpressVPN has beaten the remainder of the services on our list in nearly every category we’ve tested, there were areas we believe could be improved.
First, the customer support team at ExpressVPN responded quickly to most of the requests that we submitted, but there was one occasion where it took them up to three hours to respond.
We also noticed that ExpressVPN ranked #1 in speed tests performed through the United States and the United Kingdom, but did only rank #2 in tests performed through Australian servers.
Summary: When you want to secure your connection to the League of Legends servers, or bypass an IP ban that’s been imposed, ExpressVPN is the best service you can use.
They offer multiple different subscription packages with competitive pricing, a great customer service experience and a strong network that offers fast, reliable connections.

#2 IPVanish – (7.5 / 10) – Suitable if ExpressVPN isn’t Available for You
We’ve gone to great lengths to make sure our readers have a quality VPN service to use, but understand that there may be times you do not have the same experience with ExpressVPN we had.
If you have a poor experience with ExpressVPN and need a different service to use, or if you find that ExpressVPN isn’t available for you, IPVanish could be a suitable alternative.
They offer a couple of different subscription packages, and one of the lowest prices we’ve seen. They charge $7.50 per month for monthly packages, or $4.87 per month for a 12-month package.
The software provided with our subscription was easy to download, install and configure, and allowed us to connect to the IPVanish servers within a few minutes of subscribing.
The customer support team at IPVanish is helpful when they respond, but we regularly waited more than three hours for responses to the questions we submitted.
They have a strong network with reliable connections and ranked #2 in speed tests that we performed through servers in the United States and the United Kingdom.
They did perform well in most tests, but, like ExpressVPN, there were areas that we believe IPVanish could improve that would have helped them rank higher during our review.
For instance, there were cases where we waited more than 24 hours to receive a response to the requests that we submitted to the IPVanish customer support team.
They also ranked #3 when we performed speed tests through servers based in Australia, which shows room for significant improvement.
Summary: While our testing process revealed that ExpressVPN outperformed IPVanish in nearly every category, we understand that there may be times ExpressVPN is unavailable for you.
For times like those, IPVanish could be a suitable alternative. They offer competitive pricing, a solid network and a good customer support team.

#3 HideMyAss – (5.5 / 10) – Not Recommended
While HideMyAss did make it into the third spot, we do not want our readers to think that we are making a recommendation for their service.
While testing the HideMyAss service, we experienced significant issues as soon as the review process began, and those problems persisted throughout the entire testing process.
After subscribing to the HideMyAss service, we downloaded, installed and configured the software they supplied with our subscription, and didn’t have many problems.
Using the software supplied with our subscription to connect to their network was easy to do, but once we were connected to their network the problems began.
Throughout testing the HideMyAss service, we had a very difficult time maintaining a connection to their network, which made it nearly impossible to achieve accurate results.
They are one of the most expensive services that we’ve tested, charging $9.29 per month for 12-month subscriptions and $16.99 per month for month-to-month packages.
During speed tests, we found that they provided slow connection speeds, and it was hard to maintain a reliable connection to achieve accurate results from our speed tests.
We attempted to contact their customer support team for assistance with the problems we were having, and were forced to wait more than 24 hours for a response in nearly every case.
Summary: If you are trying to secure your connection to the League of Legends servers, there are far better services you can choose over HideMyAss.
During our testing, we found that ExpressVPN offers the best network and customer service and that IPVanish would be a decent alternative if ExpressVPN isn’t available.
