Best VPN for Downloading Movies
Summary: Downloading movies is infinitely cheaper than buying DVDs or maintaining subscriptions to numerous different online content networks that typically don’t have the newest titles.
When you’re trying to download movies, or even access some content networks, you could find out that your access has been blocked.
Downloading movies that you do not specifically own is also illegal in most parts of the world, so you could find yourself facing prosecution for copyright violations.
Both situations create problems when you’re trying to download the latest movies and keep up with your favorite TV shows, but both problems can be avoided completely by using a VPN service.
VPN, or Virtual Private Network services allow you to hide your original location so you can bypass restrictions and keep you anonymous so you don’t need to worry about being prosecuted.
By connecting through a VPN service you can download movies and hide your activity while you are connected to the internet.

Top Three VPNs for Downloading Movies
At Etherzone, we have built a team of researchers and writers that pride themselves as being recognized for staying at the forefront of the internet technology and security industries.
Our primary mission is to help each and every one of our readers overcome the issues and problems they face while using the internet.
In 2017, we have uncovered 173 different VPN services. Each service claims that they are the best in the business with their sales and marketing messages.
To help ensure you’re not wasting money by subscribing to a low-quality service, we are going to test each of the different services available to find the best VPN for downloading movies.
To ensure you can bypass the restrictions you’re facing while downloading movies and avoid prosecution, we’re going to test each of the 173 services using a three-part elimination process.
To skip the methodology and go straight to our recommendations, click here now.
Our eliminations began by immediately removing services that are primarily based in countries where they can be forced to track your network activity by the local government.
We then eliminated services that do not offer the features we believe are necessary for keeping yourself safe while you are downloading movies online.
Then, we utilized third-party websites that consolidate reviews from customers with each of the services remaining on our list, and eliminated services that have consistently received poor ratings.
Finally, all of the services that remained through previous eliminations were compared against each other using five criteria to make an objective determination for the best VPN.
Those criteria are:
Price – Price is important to consider because the most expensive VPN services aren’t always the best, and the cheapest services aren’t always the worst.
Setup Process – We tested each service by subscribing and installing the software that’s included with the subscription to ensure it’s easy to establish a connection to their network.
Ease of Use – We also verified that maintaining a reliable connection to each service’s network is easy and doesn’t require assistance from customer support.
Speed – We performed speed tests for each service to obtain average speeds through servers based in three different locations around the world.
Customer Service – We also submitted multiple requests to each service’s customer support teams. One was sent before the sale, one after the sale and one with a technical support issue.
Below are the results we’ve found during our elimination and review process.
When you’re trying to download movies online, the last thing you want to deal with is a service that tracks your activity while you’re connected to their network.
Unfortunately, many services are being forced to participate in an invasive internet surveillance program that’s commonly referred to as “14 Eyes.”
The 14 Eyes program is an agreement between different governments that forces internet service providers in their country to log their subscribers’ activity.
During our initial research, we found that 123 of our original 173 VPN services are participants in this program. They have been eliminated from our review.
As we move forward, we’re going to be looking at the features offered by each service and removing those that do not offer features you need to download movies.
We’ll cover each of the features we’re looking for and then give you examples of the services that have been removed from our list for not providing those features.
Criteria #1: OpenVPN Support
Any time you establish a connection to the internet or a VPN service, they are going to use one of many different protocols to manage your connection.
When it comes to security and anonymity, OpenVPN is widely regarded as one of the best protocols available, which is why we’ve eliminated services that do not support it.
Betternet and AnonVPN are two VPN services that have been removed from our list due to failing to offer support for the OpenVPN protocol.
Criteria #2: Unlimited Bandwidth and Data Transfer
Whenever you are downloading content and files, streaming videos, checking your email and browsing your favorite social media websites, you are consuming bandwidth.
Companies that monitor the amount of bandwidth you’re using and limit your account access or slow your connection speeds for excessive consumption have been eliminated from our list.
Cloak and Celo are two services with bandwidth limiting policies that we’ve eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.
Criteria #3: No Data Logging Policies
Data logging is an invasive practice, even when it’s used to help diagnose problems people are having on the service’s network or to provide customer support.
Any service that has policies in place that allow them to monitor your network activity, whether harmless or not, has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.
Hola!VPN and Seed4Me are two VPN services that have been eliminated from our list because they track your activity while you are connected to their network.
Criteria #4: Support for Multiple Operating Systems
Protecting every device that you own that you use to connect to the internet requires using a VPN service that supports every mainstream operating system.
Any VPN service that provides software that is buggy with some or all mainstream operating systems has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.
IntelliVPN and SunVPN are two of the services that we have removed from our list because their software is buggy with different operating systems.
Criteria #5: Support Multiple Concurrent Connections
The way that you need a VPN service that supports every mainstream operating system because you own multiple devices means you also need a service that allows multiple connections.
Any service that does not allow you to open multiple concurrent connections, or becomes slow and unreliable when you try, has been eliminated from our review.
HotVPN and IBVPN are two services that have been eliminated from our list because they do not allow subscribers to open multiple active connections.
Criteria #6: Free Trials, Refunds, and Money-Back Guarantee
We want to ensure that our readers are protected, especially when they’re taking a recommendation for a service that we have given to them.
To ensure that you’re not going to potentially waste money, we have eliminated any service that does not offer a free-trial period or a money-back guarantee.
VPN Shield and VPNBaron are two services that have been eliminated from our list and are ineligible to receive our recommendation.
Criteria #7: No Peer2Peer Blocking
Downloading movies, especially large movies, typically requires you to connect to services that utilize Peer2Peer technology, such as filesharing networks like BitTorrent.
Any service that blocks your ability to access Peer2Peer networks and filesharing technology has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.
LibertyVPN and VPNJack are two services that have been eliminated from our list because they block your ability to access filesharing networks to download movies.
Criteria #8: No Mandatory SMTP Blocking
Being forced to disconnect from your VPN service to send and receive emails and then reconnect when you’re done is a frustrating experience.
Any service that blocks your ability to send and receive emails while you’re connected to their network has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.
TorVPN and Tunnelbear are two services that have been eliminated because they block your ability to send and receive emails while connected to their network.
Our elimination process moved forward by utilizing third-party websites that consolidate reviews from past and current customers of each service that has remained on our list.
Any service that has consistently received negative feedback and reviews and developed a poor reputation in the industry has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.
After working through a list of 173 different VPN services and eliminating services that lack the features we believe are necessary for downloading movies, three services remained.
Each of the remaining three services will be reviewed based on five criteria:
- Setup Process
- Ease of Use
- Customer Service
After testing the final three services, we found that one service made its way to the front of the pack and easily received our recommendation as the best VPN for downloading movies.
#1 ExpressVPN – (9.5 / 10) – The Best VPN Service for Downloading Movies
When you are looking for the best VPN service for downloading movies, we have found that ExpressVPN is the clear winner and can help you remain anonymous and secure online.
ExpressVPN offers relatively competitive pricing that’s just cheap enough to be attractive to most people, but still high enough to help them continue developing their network and service.
When you subscribe to ExpressVPN, you’ll download the software that you can use to connect to their network and establish a connection within a few minutes.
It’s easy to see that they devote a significant amount of resources to developing their network, because the software is simple to use and their network proved to be reliable.
We performed speed tests through servers located around the world, and ExpressVPN claimed the top spot in tests performed through servers inside the United States and the United Kingdom.
If you happen to have issues with your account or connection, the ExpressVPN customer support team responds quickly. We received responses in less than 60 minutes in most cases.
We whole-heartedly feel that ExpressVPN is currently the best VPN service in the industry, but there are still areas we believe could be addressed to further improve the service they offer.
There was one case where we submitted a request to their customer support team and waited around three hours for a response. This is still faster than the #2 service’s response times.
ExpressVPN also ranked #2 when speed tests were performed through servers located inside of Australia. This could be attributed to the time of day we performed the tests though.
Summary: As our review process was finalized, we found that ExpressVPN easily topped the charts in every category, securing them our #1 spot.
If you are trying to remain anonymous while downloading movies, ExpressVPN can help you do it with a strong network, competitive pricing and a responsive customer support team.

#2 IPVanish – (7.5 / 10) – Suitable if ExpressVPN isn’t Available for You
We have gone to great lengths to ensure that we’re only recommending the best VPN services currently available, but we do understand that your experience may differ from ours.
In cases where you find yourself having a different experience with ExpressVPN than we’ve had, or find that they are unavailable for you, IPVanish could be a suitable alternative solution.
When it comes to pricing, IPVanish offers some of the most competitive prices that we’ve seen, charging as little as $4.87 per month when you subscribe for 12 months at a time.
They also provide software that didn’t cause many issues on the system we were performing the tests through, and we used it to establish a connection to their network within a few minutes.
The customer support team at IPVanish is helpful, though not as responsive as the ExpressVPN team. During testing, we waited around three hours for a response to the requests we submitted.
The IPVanish network is strong enough to download movies, but we found they ranked #2 in speed tests performed through the United States and the United Kingdom.
While IPVanish did perform relatively well, there were also areas we believe could be addressed to help improve their network and possibly secure a higher spot in future reviews.
We contacted their customer support team on multiple different occasions, and had one occasion where we were forced to wait upwards of 24 hours to receive a response, which is unacceptable.
During speed tests performed through Australian-based servers, we also found that IPVanish ranked #3. This could be due to the load on their servers at the time we performed the test though.
Summary: There could be times that you find ExpressVPN isn’t available in your area, or isn’t compatible with your hardware and software.
While we have gone to great lengths to ensure they work for a majority of our readers, if you find they do not work for you, IPVanish could be a suitable alternative VPN service.

#3 HideMyAss – (5.5 / 10) – Not Recommended
Even though HideMyAss secured our #3 spot, their being on our list does not necessarily constitute us giving them a recommendation as a viable VPN for downloading movies.
We experienced significant issues while testing their service, and the issues that we had persisted during the entire review process, making it hard to recommend them to our readers.
The only areas that did not cause issues for us were subscribing to their service and downloading the software that was included with our subscription.
The HideMyAss software made it easy to connect to their network, but once a connection was established the problems started happening and lasted throughout the duration of our review.
HideMyAss is one of the most expensive VPN services we have reviewed, charging nearly $17 per month for a subscription, or $9.29 per month when you subscribe for 12 months at a time.
We performed multiple speed tests while connected to their network, and found that achieving accurate results was nearly impossible due to the reliability issues we faced.
While attempting to contact the HideMyAss customer support team, we waited more than 24 hours to receive a response to the requests that we submitted.
Summary: When you are trying to stay safe and anonymous while you are downloading movies online, there are far better services available than HideMyAss.
After extensive testing, we found their network to be unreliable and their customer support team takes too long to respond to requests submitted to them.
