Best Proxy Software Services

Published 3 years ago -  - 3y ago 11

Summary: Whenever you connect to the internet, your connection is opened to the risk of hackers taking it over and intercepting the sensitive information you’re sending and receiving.

You also run the risk of being placed into invasive surveillance programs that monitor what you’re doing online and potentially use that information to prosecute you in a court of law.

If you are in certain countries, you could find that your favorite websites have been blocked because of the local government’s censorship laws.

The best way to bypass all these problems is to use a proxy software service that helps you hide your original location, keeps you anonymous online, and encrypts the information you send and receive.

Proxy software services, also known as Virtual Private Network services, can keep you safe and secure while you are connected to the internet.

Why You Should Trust Us

At Etherzone, we have a full team of researchers and writers that pride themselves in staying at the leading edge of the internet security and technology industries.

Our primary goal is to help each, and every one of our readers overcome the problems they’re having when they connect to the internet.

Testing Methodology

In 2017, you have more than 170 different proxy software services you can choose from, and they all make the claim that they are the best service currently available.

Here at Etherzone, we know that there can be only one best, which is why we’ve set out to compare each of the available services against each other to find the true winner.

How We Tested Each VPN Service

To help you overcome the issues you’re having with your connection, security, and anonymity, we’re going to test each of the 173 proxy software services currently available.

To skip the methodology and go straight to our recommendations, click here now.

We will work to dwindle down the list be removing any services that force you to participate in invasive surveillance and data logging programs.

We will also be eliminating any services that do not provide the features we believe are a requirement for users looking to stay secure and anonymous online.

Then, we will eliminate any services that have developed a poor reputation in the industry by utilizing third-party websites that consolidate reviews from customers of each service on our list.

Finally, we will take the remaining software proxy services and compare them against each other using 5 different criteria to help determine which service is the best in 2017.

Those criteria are:

Price – Pricing is important, because some of the most expensive services provide the worst experience, while some of the cheapest services offer acceptable levels of service.

Setup Process – We want to ensure you do not encounter any problems while subscribing to a service we recommend and using their software to connect to their network.

Ease of Use – We also want to ensure that you can establish a connection to their network, and maintain a reliable connection while you are logged into their service.

Speed – We will test each service’s connection speeds by performing load tests through servers located in different parts of the world, and averaging the results.

Customer Service – We will also contact each service’s customer support team to determine how quickly they respond to requests, and if their support team provides helpful responses.

Below are the results we’ve found during our elimination and review process.

VPN Services You Should Avoid

Whenever you’re looking for a proxy software service, one of your biggest priorities is staying anonymous while you are connected to the internet.

There is an invasive surveillance program that’s being implemented around the world, and more governments are forcing internet service providers in their country to participate in it.

The program is known as “14 Eyes” and it’s an agreement between different governments that allows them to spy on your internet activity and potentially use the information to prosecute you.

Any VPN service that is primarily based in a country that participates in 14 Eyes has been immediately eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.

VPNs Disqualified Due to Missing Features

As we move forward eliminating services, we are going to remove any service that does not provide the features we believe are necessary for high-quality proxy software services.

We will cover each of the features we believe are required and then give you examples of services that have been eliminated from our list.

Criteria #1: OpenVPN Support

When you connect to your internet service provider or a proxy software service, they are going to use one of many different protocols to manage your connection to their network.

OpenVPN is regarded as one of the most secure and easiest to use protocols, so we have eliminated any service from our list that does not support it or offer support for it with your subscription.

AnonVPN and Betternet are two services that we’ve eliminated because they do not provide OpenVPN support.

Criteria #2: Unlimited Bandwidth & Data Transfer

If you regularly download large files, spend significant amounts of time on the internet, or stream video content, you could find yourself consuming excessive amounts of bandwidth.

Some proxy software services will limit your account access or throttle your connection speeds. Any service with bandwidth limiting policies on our list has been eliminated.

Cloak and Celo are two services that we have eliminated because they do not allow unlimited bandwidth with your subscription.

Criteria #3: No Data Logging Policies

When you’re using a proxy to connect to the internet, the last thing you want to deal with is a service that tracks your network activity and stores the information on an unsecured server.

To ensure you do not find yourself being forced to participate in surveillance programs, we have eliminated any service that has data logging policies in place.

Hola!VPN and Seed4Me are two services that track your activity that have been eliminated from being eligible for our recommendation.

Criteria #4: Support for Multiple Operating Systems

Many services offer support for most mainstream operating systems, however some services provide software that is buggy and incompatible with different operating systems.

Any proxy service that provide buggy software or do not support every mainstream operating system has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.

IntelliVPN and SunVPN are two services that have been removed from our list because the software they provide with your subscription is buggy or incompatible with different operating systems.

Criteria #5: Support Multiple Concurrent Connections

If you connect to the internet with more than one device, you are going to need a service that allows you to connect each device to their network at the same time.

Some VPN services will limit the number of connections to their servers you can have open at any one time. Those services have been eliminated from our list.

IBVPN and HotVPN are two services we have eliminated because they do not allow you to open multiple concurrent connections.

Criteria #6: Free-Trials, Refunds, and Money-Back Guarantee

We want to make sure that you are protected when you take a recommendation from us and subscribe to one of the services we have recommended.

To ensure that you do not risk your money by taking our recommendation, we have eliminated any service that does not offer a free trial period or a money-back guarantee.

VPN Shield and VPNBaron are two services we have eliminated because they do not offer a money-back guarantee or offer a free trial period so you can test their service without risking your money.

Criteria #7: No Peer2Peer Blocking

Many filesharing networks and video streaming services utilize Peer2Peer technology to help lessen the load on their servers and deliver fast connection speeds while you’re on their network.

However, some proxy services will block your ability to connect to Peer2Peer networks, which is why we have eliminated those services from being eligible for our recommendation.

LibertyVPN and VPNJack are two services that block your ability to connect to Peer2Peer networks and have been eliminated from our list.

Criteria #8: No Mandatory SMTP Blocking

Many services will also block your ability to send and receive emails while you are connected to their network because spammers have abused the ability in the past.

Any service that does not allow you to send and receive emails while you are connected has been removed from our list and become ineligible to receive our recommendation.

Tunnelbear and TorVPN are two of the services we have eliminated because they do not allow you to send and receive emails while you are logged into their network.

VPNs Eliminated Due to Poor Reviews

To continue dwindling down our list of eligible services, we are going to utilize third-party websites that collect reviews from past and current customers.

Any VPN service that has consistently received negative reviews and developed a poor reputation in the industry has been eliminated from being eligible to receive our recommendation.

Top 3 Proxy Software Services

After eliminating a large portion of the services on our list, we have managed to dwindle down the services competing for our recommendation to a total of 3.

Each of the remaining three services will be reviewed based on five criteria:

  • Price
  • Setup Process
  • Ease of Use
  • Speed
  • Customer Service

Each of the 3 services remaining on our list will be compared against one another to determine which service is best for keeping you secure and anonymous online.

#1 ExpressVPN (9.5 / 10) – The Best Proxy Software Service

Whenever you’re trying to find the best proxy software service, the service that ExpressVPN offers is the best in the industry. They’re affordable, fast, reliable, and have a great customer service team.

PROs

We have found that even though ExpressVPN isn’t the cheapest, they’re also not the most expensive service. The amount they charge makes it possible for them to continue growing their network and customer support team.

They currently charge $12.95 per month when you subscribe on a month-to-month basis, and only $8.32 per month whenever you subscribe for 12 months at a time.

The software that’s included with your subscription makes it simple to connect to their network. During testing, we were connected within a few minutes after subscribing.

As we performed speed tests, ExpressVPN delivered the same speeds as our internet service provider, suggesting they could be even faster if your ISP is faster than ours.

We contacted the ExpressVPN customer support team multiple different times and received a response to the requests we submitted within 60 minutes, in most cases.

CONs

Even though ExpressVPN topped the charts during testing, there were experiences we had that leads us to believe they could improve their service even more.

For instance, on one occasion while contacting their customer support team, we waited 3 hours to receive a response. This is acceptable, but their average response times were less than 60 minutes.

We also noticed that they provide slower connection speeds through servers based in Australia. The connections were reliable, but slightly slower than through servers in the U.S. and the U.K.

Summary: After we completed extended testing on ExpressVPN’s network, we have found they are the best proxy service currently available.

They offer competitive pricing, a great customer service team, fast and reliable connection speeds, and servers located around the world, making it easy to protect yourself online.

#2 IPVanish – (7.5 / 10) – Suitable if ExpressVPN isn’t Available for You

Even though we have gone through extended testing on the ExpressVPN network to ensure they’re the best option, we do understand your experience may be different than ours.

If you experience issues with your connection, your account, or the customer support team at ExpressVPN, IPVanish could be a good suitable alternative to keep you protected online.

PROs

IPVanish is currently one of the cheapest VPN services we’ve tested, costing less than $5 per month when you subscribe for 12 months at a time.

The software provided with your subscription to IPVanish makes it easy to connect to their network, and we were logged into their servers within 10 minutes after subscribing.

We performed speed tests through servers around the world and found that IPVanish ranked #2 in tests performed through servers in the United States and the United Kingdom.

If you do have issues with your account or your connection to their network, the IPVanish customer support team is responsive, answering our requests within 3 hours, in most cases.

CONs

While IPVanish did perform relatively well in most areas that we tested, like ExpressVPN, there are areas we believe could be improved.

In one occasion, we waited up to 8 hours for a response a request that we submitted to their customer support team, which was problematic while trying to quickly solve problems we were having.

The speeds that they provided through tests performed on servers based in Australia also proved slower. We believe this may be due to the time of day we ran the tests, though.

Summary: While performing extended testing, we have found that ExpressVPN is the clear winner in all the tests that we ran each of the different services through.

However, if you are unable to open an account with ExpressVPN or find yourself having issues that we didn’t have while testing their service, IPVanish could be a suitable alternative.

#3 HideMyAss – (5.5 / 10) (Not Recommended)

We need to make a small disclaimer before we get into the results of testing HideMyAss. Even though they ranked #3 on our list, we are not necessarily recommending them to our readers.

While testing their service, we experienced multiple issues with their network, our account, and their customer service response times.

PROs

The only part of our review that we did not experience issues while testing the HideMyAss service is with the software they provide for you to use to connect to their network.

The software is simple to install and configure to establish a connection to their servers, and were connected within 15 minutes after subscribing to their service.

CONs

Once connected to their network, though, the problems we would have begun, and lasted throughout the entire time we were putting them through our extensive testing process.

HideMyAss is currently one of the most expensive services available, charging $16.99 per month for a subscription, or $9.29 when you subscribe for 12 months at a time.

During speed tests, we experienced significant connection issues which made it nearly impossible to achieve accurate results from the tests we performed.

We contacted the HideMyAss customer support team for help with the issues we were having and waited more than 24 hours to receive responses that still didn’t help us rectify the issues.

Summary: If you are trying to protect yourself online and do it without getting frustrated, we believe there are better services available than what HideMyAss offers.

While reviewing each of the different services on our list, we have found that ExpressVPN easily outperformed HideMyAss to claim the top spot.
